People debate endlessly about which are the best board games of them all.

Some people point to Chess, others go for a classic like Monopoly, and there are many who favour recent entries to the board gaming world, such as Catan or Settlers of Catan.

Whichever games one chooses to mention, there are others that more than deserve to be mentioned for the quality of their play, and for the design work put into them.

One of these — in my humble opinion — is the game that the below article is dedicated to: Gloomhaven.

In this article, I will give you a list of ten other board games which are similar to Gloomhaven. I’ve tried to cover games that are orientated on dungeon crawling, character creation, party advancement and the solo play, so I hope that this article will help you to expand your board game collection.

First and foremost, here is an image that will quickly take you to Amazon, where you can read reviews to help you make your decision. The above image links to the latest slash in terms of the full Gloomhaven board game.

Descent is a game that uses a unique dice and card mechanic to resolve actions. Instead of dice rolling, you use cards to help you resolve many different actions. At the end of each round, all the unused cards are returned to their respective decks. Therefore, you want to make sure you use all your cards or risk not getting them back. In addition, each miniature has 4 different actions they can take during the round.

Another unique mechanic is the roll and hold system that the game uses. Each player has 3 unique actions they can take during their turn but they choose 2 actions and roll the dice for the 2nd action. They then can either take the first action or hold onto the die for their second action.
